STAX SR-L300 Open-Back Electrostatic Headphones

Join Waitlist

The L300 is a great introduction to the world of electrostatic sound reproduction, with its trademark detail, openness, and fluidity. The L300 has a balanced presentation that leans a bit toward the midrange. For higher comfort and a warmer tone, try the L500, and for punchier electrostatic bass, check out the L700 and above models.

Description

Tough fixed electrodes machined through stainless photo etching has also been employed for the SR-L300.Thus rich deep bass response, delicate high-frequency and smoothing mid-range have been realized in a balanced manner.

The arc assembly of the SR-L300 is equipped with steeples slider mechanism for head-pad height adjustment.

OFC cable has been employed for the core wires and the whole cable uses special wide parallel structure to lower the capacitance between each wire strand.

The high-quality flexible artificial leather ear pad contributes not only to improve the wear feeling, but also to enhance the”freshness of sound” and “the grace of sound”.

Poor man's electrostatics

"yes, they are made completely from plastic, but the sound is wonderful to me. I'm 80 years old, and I'm making a bet that I will break before the phones do. I needed phones with an ear opening large enough to leave a little space for my recently-acquired hearing aids, and these fill the bill. No, it's not a perfect fix, but after trying some other phones, I realized the Stax design works best for me"

It’s hard to beat it

"The L300 is a super detailed and flat headphone. It’s great for classical, but I wouldn’t say I liked it with other genres."

Finally a Budget Entry to Electrostatic

"Definitely an interesting headphone. Everyone should try it and feel how different they sound - in a good way."

Very good value for entry level Stax

"I purchased an L300 to have as a backup headphone to my x9000, It's a really interesting headphone with a tighter soundstage to the x9000 but with very good separation and layering. I would say it has a few levels better detail retrieval to the previous Lambda iterations. A perfect headphone to add to the team if you're looking for a strong string-instrument or jesty guitar-rock headphone. The high's remind me alot of the 009 (in a good way) and while it doesn't have the bass of the x9000 or 007, I really enjoy it with electronic music. Nothing in this price range compares."

L300 First Month View

"That headphone has very balanced frequency distribution. The vocal is superb!"

Still a STAX Fan

"After auditioning some of the current STAX lineup at the HeadAmp table during Axpona 2019 (along with many models from different manufacturers and other sellers – remember those days?), I knew I had to upgrade from the now dated SR-Sigma that had made me such a fan of the brand. Powered by a vintage solid state SRM-1/Mk2, the SR-L300 has all the transparency that one expects from electrostatic headphones, with accurate response and an extended treble range. These are incredibly detailed headphones that convey every aspect of the source material. For example, it was easy to discern the differences between digital filter implementations in the same DAC though the SR-L300. I was surprised to hear hard-panned instruments in some recent releases (I thought that style of mixing went out of style in the ‘60s). Imaging extends outside the head, but is largely confined to the R-L lateral plane. Soundstaging typically does not have much fore-aft depth, even with recordings where this is expected (although the vintage Sigma is unique in this regard, so my expectations may be somewhat unfair). This is not necessarily a technical flaw but a somewhat expected aspect of headphone listening, and actually attests to the legendary STAX channel matching between R and L drivers. The bass is surprisingly satisfying, with excellent definition and accuracy down to the 50-60 Hz range. The SR-L300 surely does not convey the bass “weight” of good dynamic and some mag-planar headphones – using software EQ to flatten the response down to 25Hz (oh, the horror!) does not really seem to improve this aspect of performance. The accuracy and detail of the SR-L300 can really become addictive. These are intimate headphones that put you right in the room or in the mix, whether that be up on stage or in the vocal booth. Perhaps strangely, it’s just really satisfying to always hear everything - even the shortcomings in less-than-ideal source material. Of course, great recordings just sound that much greater through the SR-L300."

Q&A

Dear HA, Do the Stax headphones require connection to the power amp if not using a Stax headphone amp? Thanks, David Ziering
You would still need a special transformer box to connect Stax headphones to a power/speaker amplifier. In most cases it makes more sense to have a dedicated amp for electrostatic headphones.
Does it come with the necessary electrostatic amp, or does the customer need to purchase one separately?
You will need an electrostatic headphone amp, such as the [STAX SRM-353X](https://www.headamp.com/products/stax-srm-353x)
