STAX chose the electrostatic driver for its ability to produce transparent sound and low weight due to the lack of magnets and coils. The minimal weight of the driver ensures a very quick response to the signal, creating a more faithful sound reproduction.
All STAX electrostatics require special amplifiers or "driver units" to supply the STAX bias voltage (580V) and high voltage audio signal.
