A great surprise
"The HD820 is one of those pieces that you have to try to believe! The sound is more open than many open headphones. You realize that the sound is a bit more closed if you compare it with the Hifiman HE1000 series, the HD800s, Meze Elite or any other that is characterized by having a huge soundstage. The resolution, dynamics and speed is on par with other $3K and $4K in most cases. You need a powerful amp for the entire frequency spectrum to do its job. A great buy for its price."

One of the best closed back headphones
"One of the best sounding closed-back headphones. The imaging is one of the best you will get for a closed-back headphone. I haven't heard a closed-back that has beaten this headphone on soundstage yet either. For gamers, this could be your endgame headphone. You will be very immersed in your gaming sessions. You will know exactly where object sounds are located with these headphones. Those snipers will only have one or two chances to snipe you before you locate them by sound :) Music lovers, this headphone has the details as well. There is not much bass, but just enough. For my preference, it is more than enough. Combo this with a good amp. It needs power to draw out it's full potential. Feed it good clean power and you will get good results. I ran into an issue with my purchase for this headphone at first with the manufacturer and Headamp resolved it right away. Their support is extremely fast to respond and provides you with a positive resolution. I will be purchasing future products from Headamp."

Phenomenal ... best I've heard
"Love open back phones, but current living situation demands closed back, limited sound leakage. Always worried with closed back that I'll get muddy sound with the reflections in earcup. Some closed backs do a better job than others, but the HD820 is nothing short of phenomenal. I really can't tell I'm not wearing opens, and the sound width, clarity, definition is worthy of the Sennheiser HD8xx family. I think some might still prefer the open backs, and if your family/housemates don't care, then great ... but if you need to keep things under wraps while still getting absolutely amazing sound, these are what you've been looking for. They sound great driven by my Denon amp, by my THX Onyx right from my iPhone (yes, seriously great), and I'm eager to try them with a dedicated tube phone amp. Careful, these are high impedance phones and will not get much volume from a low power dac/amp like the smaller DragonFlys, Helm, or iFi's. They do work great with an iPhone and the THX Onyx, although honestly, the dongle set up is a bit nutty: HD820s plugged into a 1/4 to 3.5 downsize converter, into the Onyx, into the USB C to USB A adapter (comes with Onyx), into the Apple USB A to Lightning adapter, into the iPhone. But, with the Onyx decoding pretty much everything bit perfect, including MQA, it's worth it when I'm stuck in a room with other people (working, studying, whatever), and want to really listen to music. Really hear it, all of it, from super lows to super highs, nothing missed, nothing muddied up, vocals standing out. They do really well on classical, jazz, classic rock (especially remastered), and really really well on vocal tracks (listen to The Very Best of Manhattan Transfer on Tidal with these, you honestly think you are standing in the center of the 4 of them singing around you). Full bass that doesn't swamp the vocals or other instruments in hip hop, electronic, pop. Don't listen to much rap so can't comment there. Just keep in mind that if you love the chest-thumping nature of bass, you can't get that from any headphone. However, these get the lowest range of any music I threw at them, whether electronic, string bass, or Bach fugue on the cathedral organ. The HD820 headphones sound phenomenal. That's it. So impressed."
