Our Take

AEON Core arrives in one of the most competitive parts of the headphone market with a straightforward goal: bring more of Dan Clark Audio's modern planar performance into a closed-back headphone that remains attainable for serious listeners.

It is the direct successor to AEON 2, but this is more than a cosmetic refresh. Dan Clark Audio developed a new planar magnetic driver around improved efficiency and revised the tuning using newer measurement research developed with Dr. Sean Olive. At the same time, Core retains the distinctive teardrop-shaped AEON design, closed-back isolation, and self-adjusting suspension system that have defined the family for years.

At $899, the value proposition is particularly strong. Recent independent reviews have praised AEON Core for its balanced tuning, unusually spacious presentation for a closed-back headphone, comfort, build quality, and overall price-to-performance ratio.

A New Planar Driver

AEON Core introduces an all-new planar magnetic driver engineered around three priorities: efficiency, sound quality, and more cost-effective manufacturing.

The new driver measures 17Ω impedance with approximately 94 dB/mW sensitivity according to Dan Clark Audio's current specifications. That makes Core considerably friendlier to a broad range of headphone amplifiers, portable DAC/amps, and capable desktop sources than many traditional low-sensitivity planar designs.

Why AEON Core Stands Out

  • More efficient planar driver: 17Ω impedance and approximately 94 dB/mW sensitivity make Core easier to pair with a wider range of amplifiers.
  • Low-distortion performance: The new planar driver is engineered for the speed, control, and clarity that define the AEON family.
  • Revised reference tuning: AEON Core is tuned around updated Harman research developed with Dr. Sean Olive.
  • Closed-back versatility: Useful isolation combines with an unusually spacious presentation for a sealed headphone.

A Revised Reference

AEON Core is the first Dan Clark Audio headphone tuned to a revised Harman over-ear target developed through research with Dr. Sean Olive.

The work updates how the established Harman headphone target translates to modern measurement systems. Rather than simply copying an older target curve, Clark and Olive revisited the underlying measurement relationship to create a reference better suited to current industry-standard test equipment.

In practice, AEON Core lands on the neutral-to-natural side of the spectrum, with tight, controlled bass, a slightly fuller and warmer midrange than several recent DCA models, clear and present vocals, and treble that remains lively without generally becoming sharp or aggressive. Independent impressions differ somewhat on the exact balance, but there is broad agreement that Core sounds coherent, engaging, and more full-bodied than a stereotypically thin or analytical reference headphone.

Unlike several of Dan Clark Audio's higher-tier headphones, AEON Core does not use the Acoustic Metamaterial Tuning System (AMTS). Instead, DCA uses a combination of diffusion and absorption inside the acoustic system to smooth the upper frequencies while avoiding the added cost and complexity of AMTS.

Closed-Back Without Feeling Closed-In

The sealed-back design provides useful isolation from outside noise and helps keep your music from disturbing people nearby, making AEON Core better suited to shared spaces and environments where an open-back headphone would be impractical.

One of AEON Core's more impressive traits is its sense of width and openness for a closed-back headphone. The presentation remains more intimate than DCA's E3 or Stealth, but Core projects laterally beyond what many sealed headphones manage while maintaining clean center imaging and good separation.

Build & Comfort

Aluminum & Wood

AEON Core updates the familiar teardrop-shaped AEON design with a darker aluminum-and-wood aesthetic. The result is understated but distinctly more premium than the earlier carbon-fiber-inspired AEON finishes.

Self-Adjusting Suspension

A nickel-titanium headband works with a self-adjusting suspension strap and generously sized memory-foam ear pads to distribute pressure across the head. At 440 g, Core is not a lightweight headphone, but the suspension system is designed to make that weight comfortable over longer sessions.

Travel note: Unlike AEON 2, AEON Core does not use the folding mechanism that allowed earlier models to collapse into a compact hard case. Core instead includes a soft storage pouch, one of several practical choices DCA made while putting more of the product's cost into the headphone itself.
