“Dan Clark Audio’s design goal is to never compromise on sound, comfort, or aesthetics. EXPANSE is our ultimate open headphone statement and embodies everything we’ve learned since our inception.”
— Dan Clark, Founder and CEO
Our Take
EXPANSE is the kind of headphone that stops you mid-track. It combines Dan Clark Audio’s all-new
4th-generation planar magnetic driver with their breakthrough Acoustic Metamaterial Tuning System (AMTS),
plus an entirely redesigned headband that nails ergonomics without sacrificing style.
We recommend pairing it with our
GS-X Mini
amplifier and the
Chord Qutest DAC
for an incredible, reference-level system.
Acoustic Metamaterial Tuning System (AMTS)
Headphones can develop standing waves at higher frequencies, which can make instruments like strings, cymbals,
and even vocals sound unrealistic and fatiguing. AMTS is Dan Clark Audio’s patent-pending inline device located
between the transducer and ear.
AMTS integrates waveguides, diffusion control, quarter-wave, and Helmholtz resonators into one compact structure
to reduce standing waves and smooth and shape the frequency response from the midrange through the highest frequencies.
With AMTS, high frequencies are rendered with a refreshingly smooth, accurate, and detailed delivery across genres.
(Bad recordings are still bad — Dan’s not a magician!)
DCA’s Most Advanced Driver
EXPANSE’s 4th-generation planar-magnetic driver delivers the smoothest, richest, and most detailed experience Dan Clark Audio
could create. EXPANSE’s driver is 20% larger than the ETHER 2 driver and uses patented v-Planar technology to reduce THD to
< 0.03% while improving low-frequency extension.
Diaphragm tension is set using a proprietary system that creates more uniform and consistent tension across the entire driver surface
to minimize distortion and improve driver matching to better than 0.25 dB weighted across the spectrum for imaging and balance.
Mechanical Design Innovations
EXPANSE takes its cues from STEALTH and adds an exciting, unique open grill based on mathematical functions derived from the principles
of generative design for a truly distinctive flagship look.
The top-grade black leather headband features fine blue stitching to create a quilted head-strap that’s both gorgeous and functional.
Gone are mechanical sliders for fit adjustment; Dan Clark Audio designed a stable yet comfortable
“self-adjusting suspension system” that seats the headphone just right.
At just 418 g, EXPANSE is also one of the lightest super-premium headphones available. Taken together, the vegan suede and “leather”
ear pads, self-adjusting suspension, and lightweight chassis make EXPANSE so comfy you can just ignore it and vanish into your music.
EXPANSE Redefines “Detail”
Unlike many headphones where “detail” is created through exaggerated high-frequency energy, EXPANSE’s AMTS delivers industry-leading resolution
without the fatiguing highs some listeners are used to. Together, the 4th-generation motor and AMTS deliver a sonic performance best described as
“effortless.”
From delicately plucked strings to the most intense orchestral dynamics, or the weight and attack of a kick drum to the overtones and decay of a crash cymbal,
EXPANSE delivers an exceptional balance of nuance and punch that will have you reaching for favorite recordings—and maybe staying up a bit too late.
And last but not least, there’s the soundstage: EXPANSE can compete with any open headphone in depth, width, and imaging. Its sense of space and instrument
placement allows the headphone to “disappear,” so you can simply relax into your musical experience.
If It’s Not Comfortable, Game Over
Dan has often said if a headphone isn’t physically comfortable enough for extended listening sessions, then the design is flawed. That’s why comfort is a top
priority—and why Dan Clark Audio has produced some of the lightest and most comfortable headphones in the industry.
EXPANSE’s ergonomic cup shape is a natural extension of AEON 2 ergonomics (with a larger footprint). For storage or travel, it incorporates STEALTH’s folding
gimbal structure into a compact custom-molded case that’s easy to stow.
"I really think the headphone is worth the investment. The headphones are very comfortable and sound amazon. I was mainly concern for the comfort because its very tricky to make a pair of headphones that are comfortable for long periods. The hardest part is getting all three features in perfect harmony: sound, comfort, and quality. I will cherish the headphones for the foreseeable future."

Total Endgame
"I recently upgraded my headphone setup with the Dan Clark Audio Expanse headphones, paired with my Chord Qutest DAC and Pass Labs HPA-1 amplifier, and I'm absolutely blown away by the quality. The Expanse offers a stunningly wide and detailed soundstage that makes you feel enveloped in sound, perfectly complementing my gear. The open-back design contributes to an incredibly natural and immersive listening experience, with crystal clear highs and impactful lows. They are also super comfortable for long listening sessions, thanks to the luxurious materials and thoughtful design. Truly an endgame headphone for me!"

Nice product
"Nice headphone. Very neutral while having its own signature treble sound."

Dca Expanse
"The expense is an excellent headphone I've upgraded from the Hifiman He1000 v2 and it is a solid upgrade, the bass is three dimensional and you can really hear the direction that each instrument is coming from. The metamaterial waveguides makes a high pitch sound so accurate as well as unique. Ordering through Headamp is super reliable and I had the headphones in hand very quickly."

Great Headphone!
"This headphone takes my favorite headphone spot. I’ve tried many high end headphones and the one this is closest to is the Susvara except with better overall bass response. If you’re looking for a headphone with details without being fatiguing while having a good bass that’s not overpowering this is the one. The highs, mids are good as well and so is the sound stage. If you have any questions about this headphone ask!"

Stellar headphones
"I received these super fast and safely from Headamp. Justin is an awesome, communicative guy - as is the whole team. The headphones themselves are excellet - everything you want is here. I couldn't be happier! Thank you!"

One of the best open headphones
"The Expanse is a damn well made headphone and very comfortable to boot. After the Susvara, the most comfortable headphones ever! Sound-wise, it is very reminiscent of the Stealth from the same company. However, the Expanse has the slightly more pronounced bass range with a boost in the mid-bass. In addition, it sounds in the high frequency range a bit more toned down. Personally, I like this tuning better than the Stealth, since it also represents classic rock and metal with powerful slam. Overall, not quite as sober as the Stealth. Resolution-wise, this is the pinnacle of headphone design. It uncovers everything mercilessly. Just like a RAAL-requisite SR1! Stage imaging is very coherent. All the action is reproduced as one perfect image. Here you don't have that razor-sharp separation of all possible sound sources that you can pinpoint, which many find not very natural. Rather, you really sink into a sound carpet and don't try to concentrate on a single instrument all the time, but get the performance as such, just like in a concert. In principle, it sounds more open and wider than the Stealth. Nevertheless, some ambient noise isolates out similar to a semi-open. It already sounds very open, but doesn't come close to the airiness of a Susvara. The latter doesn't isolate at all on the inside and outside. Like the Stealth, the Expanse requires a powerful amplifier. The usual DAPs are a bit overwhelmed, especially if you want to turn up the volume. A GS-X- mini fits wonderfully here, as it takes the edge off the warmer tonal tuning and makes the Expanse sing effortlessly even at very high levels. All in all, a very successful headphone from DCA, which clearly belongs to the current elite of open headphones!"

Another great service experience from headamp
"Thank you headamp again for the great service! I order stealth also from headamp last year. When the initial reviews about the expanses is more musical than the stealth came out (also for the look of the super complicated open grille), I can't wait and contacted headamp and ordered last Friday. Lighting quick shipping from headamp and I received the nicely packed box this Monday. Expanse sounds warmer with more mid-bass than the stealth. I found it to be the most enjoyable dca cans I've heard Without the dark, cold sound signature of dca I hear from my previous purchases ( ether cx, ether 2, aeon open, stealth). Still super clean and precise but no longer lacking dynamics or fun."

The End of My Search (for now)
"I've been listening to these for two days now, almost constantly. This is the first headphone I have tried that manages to be as warm as I like, but also has the resolving power that I crave. I really think this may be the one headphone for me, that will finally end the debate about which headphone is right for this music genre that precedes every listening session. The best thing I can say about this headphone is that it has defied my attempts to analyze it or compare it with other headphones in my possession. What I mean is that each time I have meant to sit down and critically listen to these or A/B them with others, I have just been sucked into the music and instead sat in my chair for hours just listening. These have no "wow" factor, and I mean that in the best possible way. There isn't any standout area nor are there any glaring faults. They don't wow you with any specific part of the presentation that is above the rest, they just sound correct to me. I do tend to like the Harman curve as a target and these are pretty tight to that curve, so if you like a different tuning they may not be your cup of tea. It's doubtful anyone would have a "jaw dropping" reaction to these, in my experience that is usually caused by some accentuated part of the frequency response that eventually wears thin. Instead, my initial reaction to these was a bit neutral, until I realized that every track I played across all the genres of music that I listen to just sounded "correct". Like the proverbial porridge, nothing was "too hot" or "too cold" it was "just right". For me, these have almost all of the sonic characteristics of headphones that I have enjoyed in the past, but with none of the drawbacks that the other headphones I own come with. I got these to replace another flagship headphone that I thought could be the end of the road for me, but it wasn't a good fit. These have me just falling into the cozy embrace of my music collection and forgetting to listen for any discrepancies in reproduction, because there just aren't any that matter. I doubt I will be listening to any of my other headphones for quite some time. This is a pretty glowing review, but the way we hear is complex, I'm sure there are listeners who will not love these as much as I do, but I certainly recommend giving these an audition if you are in the market for something in this price range. I will add the warning that these appear to be fairly hard to drive. I'm using a fair amount of the volume pot on a quite powerful headphone amplifier. I tried these on a much more modest desktop amp I use at the computer, and much of the warmth was gone, leaving the Expanse sounding a bit thin. I think these need an amplifier with some serious current to sound their best, I would not recommend pairing these with a lower power or portable amplifier."

Q&A
Hi Justin, have you listened to Dan Clark Audio Expanse on the GSX Mini? There is some guy on HeadFi who said the mini would not be acceptable for use with the Expanse headphone as there is too much noise? Now I have prolly over 15000 hours on my mini since I bot it. Always flawless performance, clean and powerful output to my 4z cans. So I figured the Expanse would work fine driven by GSX Mini, with DENAFRIPS Ares II dac. I would like some confirmation and clarity on this issue if possible. If you have listened to this combination, I sure would appreciate some feedback on that if time permits. Really concerned about this.
The GS-X mini has a low noise floor and the Expanse has low sensitivity. Whoever made this comment is very misinformed. Please send us a link to correct it!
