Sundara is a Sanskrit term meaning ‘beautiful’ and ‘noble,’ both of which are accurate descriptions of the new headphone design, inside and out. Music lovers will enjoy the new Sundara Closed-Back as much if not more than the original open-back model.

Dr. Fang Bian HIFIMAN CEO & Founder

Sundara Closed-Back is highlighted by elegant, hand-assembled beechwood ear cups that serve to isolate the listener from background noise and emphasize the natural bass response of the original recording. Like the open-back version, the new Sundara Closed-Back features HIFIMAN's ultra-thin Super Nano diaphragm, which is up to 80% thinner than diaphragms in more common headphones. The design results in an ultra-wide frequency response -- 6Hz-50kHz -- with sonic detail that reveals the fine points in well-recorded music. To enjoy these at their best, pair them with a dedicated amp such as the iFi Audio xDSD Gryphon Portable DAC/Amp for portable use or our HeadAmp Gilmore Lite mk2 for in-home use.

Acoustically Invisible Stealth Magnet

Compared with the rectangular shaped magnets of traditional planar headphones, Stealth Magnets significantly reduce reflections and diffraction that are detrimental to sound quality, resulting in dramatically improved sonic output.

HIFIMAN Heritage

HIFIMAN’s NEO “supernano” Diaphragm (NsD) is 80% thinner than diaphragms in more common headphones, resulting in fast response and detailed image with lush, full range sonics.

The Natural Beauty of Elegant Beechwood Ear Cups

Hand-assembled wood grain ear cups offer the dual benefit of exceptional sonics and stylish good looks.

Classic Ergonomic Headband for Maximum Comfort

The lightweight headband Features a black matte appearance for exceptional style and comfort.

Sundara Closed Back

"Headphones are great, price was great, and they arrived quickly."

BRANDON R. (5/5)

"Great neutral sound with a massive sound stage. The clamping force is a little tight even for my small head but the leather is really comfortable. The ear-cups a very well made, the cans in general have a nice weight to them and the hinges are sturdy hard plastic. Would be five stars for me if it wasn’t for the clamping"

Very interesting cans..

"I have a number of HiFiman products and enjoy each for their own characteristics and design. These Sundara closed back have a very different sound than the orginal open back Sundaras - they should have just used a new name for them. I find these headphones sounded quite different across different types of amps which I find very entertaining. In general, on solid state OP amps they have good tone and timbre, nice natural vocals/mids, clear non siblant highs ( pretty crisp) nice detail, soundstand pretty narrow, pretty clean bass, ok sub bass. I find the headphones have ok comfort currently - mostly due to the snug clamp and thin pad cushion (non memory foam) which are not standard HE round Hifiman rings so I have not been able to try different pads. I think these headphones will become more comfortable over time when they loosen up. Overall these are nicely built headphones and the components are made from nice materials. They are a tad heavier than the orginal Sundaras. When these were introduced they cost over $300 and I think for that price they were not worth it, but at $149 they are a steal for what you get and a nice addition to my collection."

I found these to be

"I found these to be uninspired. The level of detail is poor at lower volumes. I also found the sound to often be strained, congested, and/or metallic. I'm giving them a 3 rather than a 2 because they respond well to EQ - with patience, they can probably be EQ'd to something decent. Also, with EQ they can produce some solid bass - without EQ, the bass isn't anything special. Caveats: I'm new to headphones, so my basis for comparison is very limited and comprised solely of nicer headphones than this, so maybe I'm being unfair. But, it's also possible that I'm being entirely fair...for example I'm also trying out the Ananda Nanos and still believe them to be a good buy even after listening to the HD800S and the HE1000 Stealth. In contrast, at no point have I felt like the Sundara Closed-back is a particularly good buy. These were the first headphones that I listened to in many years, and my immediate reaction was disappointment."

Everything is ok except the

"Everything is ok except the sound. Tonal balance very strange, unnatural. Highs sound artificial, very unpleasant. There is no such a planar immediacy as for example in open back, the sound more rounded. Yes it reminds me Sundara open back in some way, but very little. For example, I found Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro much more enjoyable and more open/spacious as closed back, their fast and have more clarity. Probably instrument separation better on Sundara closed back over DT770, but it doesn’t matter with such unpleasant sound. Both headphones I tried with EQ and without. I’m gonna sell this pair."
